Description

Purcell set this text by Colonel Henry Heveningham three times. The first version, though similar to the oft-performed second version, offers intriguing and beautiful variants in the setting. It first appeared in the Gentleman’s Journal in June 1692 with only the first verse. This edition adds the words of the second verse as well.
