Description

Our disc grew out of DeNOTE’s stageshow, The Mozart Project Live!, generously funded by Arts Council England in 2016 and presenting Mozart’s chamber music to new audiences in innovative ways. Based on a chapter written by DeNOTE’s fortepianist, John Irving for the multi award-winning digital book,The Mozart Project, the stageshow combined live performance with audio and video material from the iBook, projected on screen, offering a perspective on Mozart aimed at a generation of listeners whose fast-moving relationship with information is dominated by tablet technology such as the iPad. A trailer for the stageshow, The Mozart Project Live! is viewable at https://vimeo.com/177554277.

While the show explored a wide range of issues within Mozart’s chamber music (including period instruments and performance practice, musical structure, the role of chamber music in Mozart’s life and career, his fame as an improviser and so on), there was not enough time for the performance of complete pieces, hence this disc, which focuses on three contrasting works for duo, trio and quartet from the 1780s that we showcased in The Mozart Project Live!: the Sonata for Piano and Violin in B flat, K.454; the ‘Kegelstatt’ Trio for Clarinet, Viola and Piano in E flat, K.498; and the Piano Quartet in G minor, K.478.
